What is YA Literature?
The characteristics
of YA literature are the following:
·
The
main character is young
·
The
point of view of the story is told through the eyes through someone that is
young. More than likely in their teenage years.
·
The
story is direct and tells it to you straight.
There is nothing to hide. You
become aware of the major battle right away.
·
There
is a major change that happens to the main character
·
The
main character is very independent
·
The
main characters will steadily grow throughout the book. It will be gradually and in increments. And the
change will not be complete.
·
The
main problems will be contemporary ones.
·
The
main character will deal with the consequences regarding the actions and
decisions that they make.
·
The
story takes place in a span of a brief period of time. The Characters in the story are not fully
developed.
·
It
shows how teenagers grow up.
Reflections: YA literature reflects the life of a
teenager. Take away the story line and
you have what most kids are feeling emotionally and how they are feeling. It is no wonder teens are drawn to YA
literature when it is written well.
Prime examples are the Twilight series
and the Hunger Games series.
